North American Solid State Chemistry Conference 2025
July 28-31, 2025, Ames, Iowa

Two Workshops will be conducted prior to Welcome Reception on Monday, July 28th.

Workshop 1: Benefits and Pitfall of Chemistry Outreach (11am-1pm).

This workshop targets senior graduate students and postdocs seeking positions in academia. Personal experiences and different approaches to outreach from faculty at various career stage will be shared followed by open floor discussions.

11.00-11.30 Kirill Kovnir Chemistry Outreach Intro

11.30-11.45 Iyanu Ojo, Rubaiat Hasan, Vivek Upadhyay Demonstration examples

11.45-12.00 Break

12.00-12.20 Julia Zaikina Outreach without Chemicals

12.20-12.40 Gordie Miller Service Aspects of Outreach

12.40-1.00 General discussion

Workshop 2: In-situ Diffraction Studies of Synthesis (2pm-4.30pm).

This workshop targets researchers interested in utilizing in-situ studies for synthesis. Several speakers will discuss fundamental and practical aspects of the application of in-situ scattering to the science of synthesis focusing on application of synchrotron and neutron-based techniques. What information in-situ experiment can and cannot provides, how reproducible it is, how to maximize chances of obtaining useful information, how to bypass high entrance barriers, and many other questions will be discussed.

2.00-2.10 Kirill Kovnir Intro to the ISSS (In-Situ Studies of Synthesis)

2.10-2.40 Gayatri Viswanathan, Paul Oftedahl, Yao Abusa, Mahmudul Islam Rain
Beacon in the dark: Illuminating materials synthesis with in-situ powder X-ray diffraction — Lessons from the lab

2.40-3.00 Group Discussion - Formulation of challenging Reaction Question

3.00-3.20 Jamie Neilson In-situ diffraction of synthesis: picking problems and drawing conclusions

3.20-3.40 Michelle Dolgos In-situ neutron diffraction capabilities at ORNL

3.40-4.00 Xiuquan Zhou In-situ characterization of solution systems: experimental setup and data analysis

4.00-4.15 Paired Group Discussion Discussion of the Proposed Answers to Stated Challenges

4.15-4.30 Parallel Discussions on four topics: proposal writing (Nelson+Viswanathan); sample prep (Zaikina+Rain+Abusa); neutron scattering (Dolgos+Kovnir); data handling and analysis (Zhou+Oftedahl).

Workshops participation is free of charge for registered NASSCС participants. We are looking forward to seeing you in Ames.
